25 Great Ideas for Social Media Posts

If you are trying to build your social media following, it can be a challenge to get the kind of engagement you want. If you’ve ever posted and gotten crickets, or just feel like you’re in a rut, here are some ideas to help you along.

  1. Ask a question. One of my favorites is “Toilet paper, over or under?” Starting a conversation can be a great way to get engagement, and can be entertaining to people as well. Here is my list of 100 of these questions: http://www.leadershipgirl.com/100-social-media-conversation-starters/
  2. Create custom graphics for your posts. There are a lot of programs out there that will allow you to create graphics for free, including Canva.com
  3. Share inspiring or interesting videos. They can be the latest videos about fashion, make up, TED talks, or more.
  4. Celebrate a holiday, nearly any day of the year. You can find a list of holidays at daysoftheyear.com
  5. Post fill in the blank questions like “Tell me about a time when.. “
  6. Share interesting blog posts.
  7. Give a shout out or thank you to your fans, friends, family.
  8. Use live video. Many social media platforms now allow live video.
  9. Show pictures of things going on in your life, and ask people to show theirs.
  10. Ask for selfies or Gifs. You may be amazed at some of the things that people come up with in response!
  11. Share a favorite piece of artwork.
  12. Start a story with a sentence, and ask each person to add a sentence to it, and see what happens.
  13. Share an interesting topic from Wikipedia. Sometimes interesting, arcane, and little known facts, and figures can go a long way.
  14. Tell funny stories. I frequently will tell stories about what my children are up to, like the time my husband went into the grocery store with the kids for eggs, and came out with beer, chips, and 23 other items, including eggs.
  15. Share useful and helpful information.
  16. Share amber and silver alerts, and in short be a helpful member of the community.
  17. Post life hacks. Do you have life hacks that make your life easier? Post them!
  18. Host a give-away of something good, and do that.
  19. Run a 3, 5, or 7 day challenge on your social media to get people to follow, and engage.
  20. Create a top 10 list of information, news, or other things. This can work for nearly any business.
  21. Post a “throwback Thursday post” that you post an old logo, look, picture, or memorie of the past.
  22. Support a cause or charity, and engage with that charity or cause.
  23. Interview guests on live videos, and share them.
  24. Hold a flash sale. Don’t do this super often, but when you need a little bump, you can hold a flash sale.
  25. Write guest blogs, and share them with your following. You will be a very welcome guest blogger, and build an extended fan base.

There are almost as many ideas as there are stars in the sky. The point here is to have fun with what you’re doing, as it will come through and will delight your readers. You’ll start to see a boost pretty quickly, and get great results.
